Beautiful but Bound

Slovenia is a marvel of God’s creation combining Alpine peaks and meadows with rolling hills culminating in a typically stunning Mediterranean coastline. God’s image-bearers, the human race, have left an indelible impression upon the culture with a expressive and complex language, vibrant literature and art, and a safe and seemingly happy society.

Twenty years ago this year, Slovenia gained its independence as Yugoslavia was breaking up. Many Slovene thinkers supposed that this would be the dawning on a golden era for this small Central European nation. In some ways, those thinkers thought well. Yet 20 years later, one thing is still missing—an enduring, lasting joy. How can this be? Slovenia is so beautiful and friendly and peaceful.

Simple, at best only 1 in 1000 know Christ. Only Jesus can right all that is fatally wrong with us, yet 999 out of 1000 are in darkness bound by the deceitfulness and depravity of their own hearts. But can they be helped? Many say that secular Europe is too far gone or that they have so imbibed modernity and post-modernity that they can’t even comprehend the Gospel.

Maybe that is true if those who think of the Gospel as something less than it is are right. But how can we think of the Gospel as anything but the “power of God unto salvation to everyone that believeth.” God will “give the light of the knowledge of the glory of God in the face of Jesus Christ.” Will you pray and partner with us as we help take the glorious Gospel of Jesus Christ to a beautiful place that is bound by the enemy of Christ.
